Dr. Taylor MacKenzie Health Center

Having your child live at Navajo Preparatory School throughout the week can be difficult. Our goal is to provide a holistic student health approach, meaning we look at your student’s health from many different angles (physical, mental, social, etc.). The School Based Health Center (SBHC) is an outpatient clinic on campus. We bring healthcare to where students are — in school — to allow students to continue learning and growing by bringing them comprehensive health services.

We serve all Navajo Preparatory Students who have parental consent. Our services are free, thanks to our working relationship with Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock IHS.

The SBHC gives students medical and behavioral health attention including:

  • Sports physicals
  • Immunizations & flu shots
  • Illness/injuries
  • Laboratory tests
  • Prescription medications
  • Mental health counseling*
  • Family planning*

*Confidential Services for Minors: While the SBHC staff encourages students to discuss their health issues with their parents, NM law states these services do not require parental consent or notification, unless there is an immediate concern. Students requesting these services are required to sign an Informed Consent for Confidential Services.

School Nurse’s Office

The School Nurse and Health Assistant are available to provide care to students with minor illnesses or injuries.

Some of the services we provide include:

  • Acute injury and illness care, triage, and nutrition needs
  • Prescription delivery through our collaboration with NNMC and prescription dispensing
  • Over-the-counter medication dispensing
  • Health maintenance visits (immunizations, wellness visits, etc.)
  • Close follow up care by NNMC-HIS Physicians

We have two exam rooms, and one four-bed health unit/isolation area. Health Services are also available for essential/non-COVID like symptoms.

For emergent or complex needs, referrals may be made to San Juan Regional Medical Center or a local urgent care clinic, at the discretion of the School Nurse or another NPS staff member.
