Dr. Taylor MacKenzie Health Center
Having your child live at Navajo Preparatory School throughout the week can be difficult. Our goal is to provide a holistic student health approach, meaning we look at your student’s health from many different angles (physical, mental, social, etc.). The School Based Health Center (SBHC) is an outpatient clinic on campus. We bring healthcare to where students are — in school — to allow students to continue learning and growing by bringing them comprehensive health services.
We serve all Navajo Preparatory Students who have parental consent. Our services are free, thanks to our working relationship with Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock IHS.
The SBHC gives students medical and behavioral health attention including:
- Sports physicals
- Immunizations
- Laboratory tests
- Prescription medications
- Mental health counseling*
- Family planning*
*Confidential Services for Minors: While the SBHC staff encourages students to discuss their health issues with their parents, NM law states these services do not require parental consent or notification, unless there is an immediate concern. Students requesting these services are required to sign an Informed Consent for Confidential Services.
The School Nurse and Health Assistant are available to provide care to students with minor illnesses or injuries.
Some of the services we provide include:
- Supportive care for acute illness and injuries
- Over-the-counterOver the counter and prescribed medication administration
- Transparency, communication, and continuity of care for all students
- Collaborative care with NNMC IHS Physicians, Student Support Staff, School Counselor, and Athletic Trainer
- Health education and promotion for students and staff
- Assist with management of chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and allergies
- Crisis intervention for mental health concerns
- Monitoring of communicable diseases and implementation of infection control measures
- Assist with 504 plans for students with special healthcare needs
- Coordination of care with families and community healthcare providers
- Promotion of a healthy school environment through wellness initiatives and health policies
- Partnership with the Kwek Society to help end period poverty by providing menstrual hygiene products to all students
We have two exam rooms, and one four-bed health unit/isolation area. Health Services are also available for essential/non-COVID like symptoms.
For emergent or complex needs, referrals may be made to San Juan Regional Medical Center or a local urgent care clinic, at the discretion of the School Nurse or another NPS staff member.
